shedding help

ontrane Feb 01, 2005 11:01 AM

I just realized that my turtle (3 year old RES) is shedding quite a bit. Not his shell, but the exposed skin on his neck, etc. Temp in the tank is about 78-9, and I did turn it up recently because it had gone down to 70 (tank is next to the window and it's cold outside!). He's also been eating A LOT recently. Problem is, if I don't feed him 'enough', he's discovered that he can EAT the ZooMed Turtle Dock that he sometimes basks on. So I need to ge a non-edible dock (btw - I think this dock is really bad -- the material it's made of seems to constantly flake off). But beyond that, what causes the shedding?
Thanks!

You already answered your own question, excess shedding is caused by overfeeding and water that is too hot.

if your wanting a diffrent basking thing, i realy like plastic wire racks, like you can get at walmart. you put flat rocks on top. the turts can swim under so theres more room for them and they look nice and cant bee eaten.

i put in a link that shows a tank with a good filtrations systim that works great for me. if the skin sheding is caused by bad water or fungus, you can prevent that with good filtrations.

its hard to tell, but i think the tank in the pic has a plastic rack with flat stones for a basking area, like i was talkin g about
