Another Amelanistic Rainbow Boa

Jeff Clark Feb 01, 2005 01:22 PM

...I have recently learned about this snake which was captured saturday. It is currently at one of the animal dealers in Guyana. I do not have specific collection location information except that it was in the Guyana area. It looks to be fairly healthy though a little thin and has reportedly already eaten in captivity. My best guess is that it is a Guyana Rainbow, Epicrates cenchria ssp. I initially thought before I knew anything about where it came from that it might be a Brazilian Rainbow with decreased pattern.

Wow, thanks for posting this photo. What interesting color and markings! I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. It must be very rare in the Rainbow Boa world.

Jeff...Does that dealer have a price tag on it? And is it Yours yet?!!! Way Cool lookin Boa! TJ.

TJ,
...I don't think my offer of 5 grand even got serious consideration. I just hope it ends up in the hands of someone who knows how to breed Rainbow Boas rather than someone who just wants to make money.

Your topic states "another" so where is the other?

Do you have an estimated time frame for an albino BRB?

Linda

Linda,
...AFAIK there are no amelanistic BRBs in captivity. There were lots of good rumors about one or two that were imported several years ago. Equally good rumors that it or they were sold for big money to someone in Europe and that it or they died soon after. There are also very good rumors that Traci Barker in Texas got one amelanistic Argentinian Rainbow about 4 years ago. I know nothing more than that about that snake. My guess is that so far she has had no luck breeding it and is not talking about the snake until it reproduces and she has babies for sale. Our very own forum participant Ricardo Rubio has one amelanistic Colombian Rainbow Boa which has produced a small litter of hets. AFAIK mom and the babies are with Ricardo in Venezeula. Hopefully Ricardo will update us on his amelanistic CRB project. Amelanistic Rainbows are apparently very rare as those are the only ones I have heard about in many years working with this species and hanging around with herp people.

I'm not a big fan of morphs, but I have to say that Ricardo's Colombian albino is among the nicest morph I've seen. From the pics I saw and at first glance it resembles very closely a nice albino ball python, very hard to believe that such a snake can look sooooo different in that morph.

Jeff, Ricardo and his snakes are in the US. His albino maurus was caught in Venezuela which might explain it's beauty. Venezuelan maurus (from certain localities) retain a LOT of a pattern into adulthood, I doubt that a normal Colombian patternless amelanistic maurus would would even come close to his beauty.

Thanks for posting that picture Jeff, if I was the Guayanan dealer I will feed that poor snake for at least 4 months before taking picture and try to sell it

Amel or no amel in this species doesn't matter to me, because Rainbow Boas have always been admired for their notable beauty and irredesense in their normal form. Personally I don't find the albino as stunning as just a regular BRB.
My 2 cents,

I like my snakes the way I'd find them in their natural habitat (minus the ticks, scars, stub tails, exc.)and I think a Brazilian Rainbow Boa is one of the worlds most beautiful snakes. But I have to admit some of the amels are really stunning. Richardo's colombian is just gorgeous and some of the Reticulated Pythons are jaw dropping. I hate to say it but I can't help but admire the 'Sunglow' Boa Constrictors.
Yep, if I had the opportunity to keep a Amel Brazilian RB I'd pop for it.

It is a brazilian Rainbow......not a guyanan.....its three feet long in the picture and young animal.....my Guyana supplier flew to where it is at, and checked it out for me and my partner in the deal.
I offered alot of money for that snake but currently, it is way without my reach, I do not know if someone really is offering 60k for it, or if it is just a common ply to try to get as much as possible for these things.... or the dealer is full of it, but all I know is that if it isn't true, someone posting about this snake, will be very happy....that would be me......
It was caught about 19 miles from the Brazilian border.

As far as Brazilian Rainbows, there are Albinos already in this country and have been bred and produced a few albinos, there is 6 leucistics now, including the original male and his 5 offspring....that was in a magazine a bunch of years back, there are the hypos, anerys, striped, calicos, and there is in other rainbows
Albino colombians, albino guyanans, albino argentines, albino venezuelans, and they are all within this country.
Currently there are two albino guyanans in venezuela or guyana, which dissapeared on me......I had put a 5k deposit on them, and the snakes never reappeared, but that is life....I dont think my guy even had them, maybe used someone elses pictures who had them already in venezuela....if you are in venezuela please contact me so I can know what occured with these snakes.....I already got my money back, but it was a big hassle....he said something about a friend owned them, then the friend showed them to the authorities but did not have a permit for them, so they got taken away, and he is trying to get them back to get the cities paperwork to send them......hasnt happened,,,,,wahts the true story, I understand someone here has albinos in venezuela(which is my home country by the way, Maracaibo, La Guaira)
Any info would be appreciated.....
