Crested Gecko Diet

angelxena Feb 01, 2005 01:47 PM

Can you tell me about cgd. I have only had my gecko for a few weeks and though she was happy to eat it in baby food off my finger, she now turns her nose up at it. I think that the babyfood is too sweet for her as she pulls that face, you know the one kids pull when something is a bit too sweet or sour. Last night I made up a batch of cgd without babyfood and just put water with it, but I find the directions on the back tricky. What kind of consisitency should it be when I make it, seems very watery even after several minutes. Is there a measure that I can use such as a teaspoon so that I know how much to use? I suppose that if I use 2 spoons of cgd I use twice as much water, but if it on a spoon this seems to liquid, please help this is stessing me out!!!

Mix the CGD (with water) roughly according to the directions on the back of the container. Leaving it just a touch "runny" is best, as I find mixing it "normally" causes it to be too thick. My geckos prefer it to be a little liquidy.

I like to mix CGD with babyfood and a bit of water . It's a lot easier to get the right consistency and the geckos get a different flavour of fruit each week.

Mixing CGD with anything other than water throws off the nutritional balance.

We were told by the person we got our little one from to NOT feed the Crested Gecko Diet and to stick with baby food. We were to mix the fruit baby food with turkey baby food. After reading all you had posted here about the CGD and looking into it other places I decided to go that route and began introducing it to Hoolie by mixing the powder in with his fruit baby food. We were slowly increasing the mix and now we've switched to mixing up the CGD with water, waiting for it to gel and then adding some baby food. Hoolie, however, has put his sticky little foot emphatically down and hasn't touched it in days - at least as far as I can tell. He is chowing down on crickets on alternate days, however. Should I hold back on giving him crickets, or go back to the baby food with the CGD mixed in? I don't want to "tough love" him too much since he's still growing, but I do think the CGD is the best thing for him (also because he's still growing). Any advice would be wonderful!

Go cold turkey on the CGD to switch your gecko over. Mix it up with water, make it liquidy, and offer it up to your gecko whenever you normally feed him. It could take a few feedings before he really begins to chow down on it, but don't lose patience. Your gecko isn't going to starve itself instead of eating the CGD.

Perhaps it would expedite the "switching over process" to ease off the crickets for a week, just until he begins to eat the CGD regularly.

By the way, who recommended against feeding CGD?

Am trying the cold turkey method - we'll see how it goes.

I'd rather not name names about the person who told me that - don't want to 'bash' anyone. This person has raised many generations of Cresties, though. I'm sure that there are lots of people out there who are sceptical of using new stuff... Controversy can be a good thing if it's done in the right manner - it can keep you questioning, and that's important.

This reminds me of the whole 'breast vs bottle' thing - HA! We all want the best for our 'babies'!

I'm still fairly new to this hobby, and I don't know any of you personally, but from what I've read here and from looking at examples of the cresties you guys have produced I'm happy to take your advice.

Thanks again, all.

I know it's not the best but my cresteds haven't fully switched over yet.
Sometimes I mix in leopard gecko icb with babyfood instead of cgd.

Lots of good advice about the never ending "switching them over" question.

I am getting close on my new website, and have dedicated a section to questions and answers on the Superfoods... see the link below, and click on the MRP forum. You will have to use the drop down menu to view the old posts because I started this project months ago. I would like to build a good database for future newbies, so that you guys can just send them to one spot for all the info they need. Once someone reply's to the old posts, they should be viewable again.... So kick some tires and feel free to contribute your experiences....

P.S. the site isn't really officially live yet, but feel free to start posting.
