what type of snakes in ny state?

im 15 and i go upstate ny evry summer and go snake hunting i was wondering what type of snakes should i be looking for and alittle info on them would be great, like color patterns size.

NEXT reptile is gunna be one of the following!

My best advice is to purchase a field guide to reptiles & amphibians. The Peterson series has an excellent one that is not all that expensive. It comes complete with photographs & range maps.

Exactly....Not to be rude but the information you want is easy to obtain even online (you obviously know how to use a computer). The people here are most happy to help you ID what you do find, but expecting them to do your most basic footwork is a waste of their time. If you care enough to go out and find snakes, then get some ambition and look things up.

The Perterson field guide, the one Greg suggested, is a great book for IDing just about any reptile/amphibian in Eastern North America but if you are interested in just snakes then I would suggest Snakes of North America (Eastern and Central Edition), 2003, Alan Tennant. It has MUCH more in depth info on each species and subspecies. It's a great book IMO.
