previously inquired about housing snakes together .

hi i previously inquired about housing snakes together . and was really interested in kings well we decided against a king snake as we went snake shopping today and held many different species and the king snake seemed to be the least liking to being held and seemed to be fairly reclusive and secretive .we looked at corns boas pythons rat snakes hog nosed snakes and a few other colubrid type snakes and we finally we decided after about a month of looking we found the snake it is a juvinile albino black rat snake it is really docile and loves to come out . we had set the tank up a while ago we went with a fairly big tank i believe it is atleasy a 30 gallon maybe bigger .it is set up with reptibark / bed abeast mixture at the bottom . and is mainly set up in a aborial fashion many vines and pranches and such with a nice size water area it has a heat pad under the bottom on one side and a basking lamp on one of the vines to encourage him to come out and bask he is great and i love him from what the people said they said that rat snakes can be housed with more then one together so we are considering maybe another some where along the line but we want to let him acclimate to his new inviorment an dnot be stressed for a few months and make sure he is feeding and doing well before we get another and consult a few more breeders and people on if they think that 2 would be ok together if not we want what is best for him as we love him so much already .

My first snake was an albino black ratsnake. I got her almost exactly 3 years ago. I now have 13 snakes...in 13 cages. I have kept baby snakes together for brief periods of time, but always wound up setting them up in their own cage. That has worked for me. Some folks do keep snakes together and seem to do OK with it. I would suggest that you learn a lot more about snakes before you consider doing so. There are really no good reasons to house your snakes together (other than it being convenient and less costly for you). There are plenty of good reasons to give each its own cage.

That said: Enjoy your new snake, as I can tell you are already doing. Learn all you can about the North American Ratsnakes. They are wonderful animals. And, yes, I still have my first snake...She's great! Duffy
