Caught a few ovulations and thought I would share some pics.

glkherp Feb 01, 2005 05:40 PM

I know the question comes up on occasion how do you know when your female ovulates so thought I would post a few pics. That and of course wanted to share my excitement.

I can't seem to get the right angle to show how much they are actually swelling but you can still get an idea. Hope everyone enjoys.

I wonder how much the local temps affect the breeding cycle. I'm still a month and a half away from when mine normally ovulate.

Jay,

Thanks much. I'm located outside of Chicago. I'm sure the weather this year had a lot to with how my breeding season has gone. We had a really cold August this year and that kind of triggered the start of my breeding season. Normally I don't start breeding until the middle or end of November this was just a very abnormal year.

Hope you have a great season,
George

Yeah, it makes me wonder. There are some who feel the weather has nothing to do with the breeding cycle but whenever I find someone who has early ovulation, it almost always coincides with an early winter. Unfortunately, I'm in Florida and often have to artificially cool my reptiles.

Enjoy the early babies!

George, that's awesome, great pics. I love early babies. When did you start cooling and introducing?

Thanks...

We had a really cool August this year and I had some animals go off feed then, instead of losing them for the season I started putting a few things together the end of August beginning of September. All my animals are in the basement so without doing anything the ambient temp will drop around 5 degrees when it gets cold outside. I started my main cooling the end of September though October. Pretty well everything that hadn't already gone off feed got paired up when I started purposely cooling. This is the first time I have started breeding this early, but so far it seems to be working out pretty well.

Hope you have a great season,
George

Those are gorgeous animals ! Very happy for you. :D

Newbie question : do most balls take themselves off of feed for breeding season, or does it require the breeder to take them off ?

Is that first girl a ghost? What was she bred to? Thanks for the photos, hopefully that is a sight I will get to witness soon.

glkherp Feb 01, 2005 06:53 PM

Nope she is just a nice light colored normal. I actually took a picture of her with one of my ghost a while back for comparison, similar except you can really see the extra fading on the ghost.

This is her first year breeding and I put her with a pastel so it will be fun to see what pops out.

Thanks and best of luck this season,
George

That female is exceptional. Hopefully her pastel progeny will show some of her clean, bright look. Nice.

Those are some purdy sheilas.......what is/are the dad/daddies???

Best of luck George!

glkherp Feb 02, 2005 07:50 AM

Thanks,

All the females are normals. The top one was bred to a pastel, middle to a 100% het pied, and the bottom to an orange ghost. Should have lots of het ghosts, all three of my males have been breeding different females...

Good luck with everything,
George

Jim,

The first one and the last one were introduced to males the beginning of September the middle one was the end of September. Unfortunately I don't have the exact dates before 10-16 just the general time frame.

Thanks,
George

Thanks Mark,

I only do about a 6 week cool down so for the most part the temps have been back up for quit a while. The ambient temp still stays a few degrees cooler until the weather warms up but the hot spots are all back at 94.

Good luck with all your projects this year,
George
