If you ever wanted to know what 'nuptial pads' look like in WTFs

bluetubeodyssey Feb 01, 2005 07:43 PM

I decided to take an educational photo of Wabo's nuptial pad. He's an Australian WTF, almost 2 years old. The nuptial pad is that darkened skin pad right underneath his thumb joint. He uses this to grip a female during amplexus.
If your WTF has pads, then he's probably also calling too and you'd already know he's a male, but this is cool to look at in any case.
Enjoy!

thats a good pic i just need a female to compare to. if you get a min do you think you could post another?

thanks
Andy

P.S. do you have a misting system on your frogs main tank?

bluetubeodyssey Feb 04, 2005 09:51 PM

Good idea!

Above is a female without nuptial pads and below is a male with nuptial pads. See the female's thumb join, how it has no dark underside?

As for misting, I hand mist three times a day. The misters I've seen usually take up too much space, whether they go in the tank or outside of it. If you know of any small ones, I'd consider buying one.

cool.
i found a decent pump that was used for a RV on ebay for like 5 bucks it fits 1/4 inch hose and i got misting nozzels from Saurian enterprises whom i worked for for a while. works great with a digital timer that I got from HD. just look for the PSI on the "marketed" misters and compare. I think i could maintain about 12 good size tanks with it. I don't mind not misting the frogs that often and instead letting them soak. but it would be real hard to water the beautiful tank that I have going. I don't want to mess up their cycles with a constant rainy season. I don't think that it should be a problem though. correct me (anyone) if I'm wrong.

thanks again,
Andy

Humidity for White's Tree Frogs should be about 50% - 60% and their skin should be allowed to dry for a little bit everyday. This would be more similar to their australian home, where it's not as wet as say a rainforest in South America. Also it's been suggested that in constant high humidity and low temperature White's tend to be more brown. I can't verify this, but just a thought.

As for seasons, my frogs get the same care everyday throughout the year, I don't cycle them. I haven't seen this lead to any health deteriation and I haven't heard that it harms them.

Some links for you to browse:
treefrogland.mattewers.com/CareSheets/Whites.htm
allaboutfrogs.org/info/species/whites.html
media.animal.discovery.com/guides/reptiles/frogs/whitestreefrog.html

It seems that you'd either compromise the plants if you lowered the humidity for the frogs or you'd compromise the frogs if you kept the humidity high all the time for the plants. Some people get the beautiful poison dart frogs for their vivariums, or maybe some other tree frogs (waxy monkey?) would like the high humidity more than a White's would.

Good luck!
