i would reccomend a borneo shorttail...although the True sumatrans aka Black Bloods are the smallest, rerely reaching 5 feet they are more expensive... malaysians are very beautiful and are the species that is typically stereotyped with the blood python attitude and they can attain a legnth of about 7 feet, the females get bigger. Also the sumatran reds are basically a smaller malaysian in most aspects. Basically it is your decision on preferance of color, price and size.

If you read my post on January 30th regarding Bankas you will actually find a bit of info about bloods in general. I also posted a topic on January 29th about the different types of bloods. It is really just pictures but you can get an idea of what they all look like and relative size. From your post I know that you are not an amatuer. I'm not trying to treat you as such but your topic is frequently asked and read on the forum, so my responses will be aimed at the millions of adoring fans that anxiously await my every email. (remember until the doctors prove otherwise I am the king of Tennessee)No disrespect intended to you or anyone else for that matter.

In general, Blacks tend to be a bit smaller than "reds" or Borneos. My adult Blacks are under 36" and weigh less than 6 pounds, though I have seen some closer to 5'.Borneos are generally smaller than reds as well. I have heard rumors that Sumatran reds can exceed 8'and the girth of a mans waist. I never seen one quite that big, but certainly they can be very impressive animals at maturity. These are just generalizations and dont always hold true as many, many factors determine ultimate size.

As for personality, my blacks are very, very laid back, but I also have a "red" that is a couch potato. Again, very generally speaking, Blacks are said to be among the more docile blood pythons. Most of my bloods are pretty indifferent. You can handle 'em, but they dont really enjoy playtime and will give you a pretty obvious warning as to such. I do have some snakes that would rather bite you than look at you, and generally both happen at the same time. (I also have a wierd Alterna who bites me every single day)

I've said this before and I'll say it again until everybody gets it right. Buy your first blood from a dedicated and experienced breeder. Try Kara at NERDS, Barkers at VPI or any of the veteran list members (they know what they are doing and they have some insanely nice animals). They will also help you get the right animal for your needs.

Bloods are not like balls, kings, corns etc. They are a bit more complicated to care for and they can be much, much more temperamental. A cranky blood with health issues can be a very bad experience. A beautuiful healthy blood with an engaging personality can be a wonderful experience. Ive had both.

Happy snakin'

Steve
