Hard tip on tail?

Tugi Feb 01, 2005 11:19 PM

Snowball shed recently and still has a hard tip on his tail. Should I take him into a vet or herp store and have it looked at, or is it nothing to be concerned about? Thanks ahead of time for all the info you guys have provided.

They sometimes retain a few mm of shed on the tail. You can pull it off with your fingers (they love that!) or you can just leave it. It often dries out quickly and dies (dead skin is both constrictive and dehydrating, so you get a little bit of dry necrosis). Sometimes this whole piece comes off when you tug on the skin, or it drops off on its own. It's not a big deal. If more than the very tip is affected, soak the snake and remove the dead skin. I've got a couple of stub-tailed snakes from lazy owners (not trying to say that you're one) and while they've healed fine it's not as attractive.

Just let your snake soak in some lukewarm water for an hour.It should come right off.Use your fingernail and be gentle.

This happens to my snakes a lot. I wet a paper towel and gently rub the skin off the tail tip. It's usually no problem.
