Local 'national' pet store claims to be selling a 'giant'...

scott_and_cat Feb 01, 2005 11:39 PM

...Granted the albino leopard is huge and his bands are still solid.

He is 2x the size of our adult Leo at home -- but they are claiming that this leopard gecko will max out at two feet-- which we find a little odd and disconcerting, not to mention unbelieveable.

They also have him priced at $199-- which is also odd.

I guess our question is: Is the giant strain already at two feet, or did the 'reptile specalist' exaggerate. We think so.

The store is PetsMart and they would not release the breeder's name. To their credit they have been getting in some beautiful hard-to-find-pet-store reptiles-- for example an albino fat-tail. Also to the stores credit-- the reptiles are very well kept and healthy. The reptile section is kept by a educated staff who for the most part, enjoy their reptiles and exotics.

We are interested in buying this leo for his beauty alone (Plus he's super friendly)-- but want to get all the facts. For all we know he's a beautiful adult male that is priced really reasonably...who is just pretty darn big.

Thanks in advance,

Cat and Scott

sanderson22@neo.rr.com

P.S. Anyone who remembers us-- that rescued leo we took in last march is tipping the scales and doing just fine. Our AFT is HUGE and healthy. Thanks for all the advice, Tokay_Dude (if you are still lurking about). We'll be posting updated pictures with in the week.

Cheers.

i call BS!

i dont think there is even a giant that maxes out at 12 inches yet..tremper may have one though..a 2' leo os complete;y rediculous..but would be pretty cool

someone probably dropped it off there, may be a giant but it will definatly not grow to 2', they're probably just trying a feeble attemp at a marketing plea...which i dissagree with..

if you read the post he was not saying the gecko was 2 ft.. you enirely misread and misunderstood that part, he said it was 2x the size of his gecko (that means twice the size of his gecko..)

WiteLeo Feb 02, 2005 06:23 AM

Ron Tremper said

"As of August 2003, Moose was 11 1/8" and his brother (weighs 126 grams) is 11 3/8" long. This is the longest gecko I know of."

There you, not even a foot yet, maby my now hes a little bigger. Ron said it was a goal to get to a foot, so Im sure he would let us know if he got there.

Sounds like a nice leo, even if it won't get to 2 feet.

That's funny. There's a pet store by my house that is individually owned, ironically by the husband of the owner of the chinese resteraunt next door, and they have a majority of their animals "mislabeled". They got the names of the animals right, but the little captions are off. Like the iguanas there only grow a few feet apparently. And they have fish in with other fish that really shouldn't be together (and you can see that by looking in the tank). My boyfriend bought a blue crayfish once, and was told by the clerk it was a rare blue lobster, which only cost him $17.

Man a 2 foot leo gecko, nope not yet at lest. I have a nine month old giant and his at 11" right now and had been growning fast, slowing down now but adding wait.
I know our Petsmarts are alright but the other chain store tend to call what the get "special" so they can up the price. I'll amit there are alot of BIG leos out there but they do not have the getics for giant is all.

Petsmart does have access through ron tremper for tremper giant leos..petsmart was the first to have albino leopard geckos and are now to first to have tremper giants.

many ppl scoff at the $200 pricetag. ppl have to keep in mind its retail and not expo pricing or internet pricing. there is a middle man there is a markup. however its not exhuberant. if they do offer albino giants, the price is well worth it..

its normal practice to keep stores suppliers confidential..thats all part of competition.

itsazoo Feb 03, 2005 03:13 PM

correct. I do all the ordering for my store and 99% of our leos are ordered from tremper.

Thanks everyone-- I new our 'gut instinct' was right. I did'nt know the 'marts had access to Ron's stock. That makes me feel a heck of a lot better. I would pay $200 for this leo-- that's the crazy part. Not because of the 'giant' bit-- but he's an amazing looking albino.

Here's to wishing to the end of the month and maybe a new beauty.

cheers,

Cat and Scott
