can my tegus all get along?

alioops Feb 02, 2005 12:05 AM

I have a pugnaceus blue male, a shy blue female, a sleepyhead black and white female. Now I have these two rescued female tegus.

There is plenty of space for them all, kept separately, but I'd love it if they could be kept together, or at least in just two enclosures. I have not been able to keep the male in with the females because he is so obnoxious to them, and scares the little blue female too much. The new girls seem so far to hold their own with him, which is good because one of them, Zena, really goes after the little blue female and has to be separated from her for now.

my question is, is it realistic to expect them to get along together? How long does it usually take to see if it's working out? I just want to make sure noone gets hurt.

They certainly have a nice place to live, lucky Tegus.

Let me just say QUARANTINE! My rule is minimum 90 day quarantine and a clean fecal before any new animals are introduced.

That having been said, yes there is a good possibility that they will all get along. Most people I know with Tegus have no problem with multiples in a pen. The younger they are when introduced the less likely a problem. Just remember they are WILD animals and there are no rules as far as they are concerned. I can tell you from personal knowledge, if a Tegu gets upset with another they can easily kill each other with no warning or apparent provocation. So proceed with caution.

Thanks for the input, beardiedragon, and yes, they will be quarantined. For now I guess good fences (or should I say feces) make good neighbors.

By the way, I love your groundhog day cartoon.

Alioops-
I am wondering the same thing, as I am planning on getting a companion for my argentine B&W tegu.

I wanted to know what that outdoor enclosure is for. Do you have just tegus in there or something else. Whatever it is, your enclosure looks awesome! good job!

Hi Melissa and Corny-

The tegus live in the little house- I installed a radiant floor heating system for them. I did it myself and it was a total pain. But it works great.

The enclosure is just for them, they have a cat door that is always open in the summer, and I open the door for them on nice days in the winter for the non-hibernating blue tegus. They would probably eat any other reptiles if I were to try to keep other pets in there.

I have been working on their house, and observing them today, and I can tell you that they all have very distinctive personalities. Some are more bossy and agressive, and some are more passive and shy
