small female breeding/egg laying question

gone_balls_crazy Feb 02, 2005 01:34 AM

I was talking with a guy about unusual female that he has and he told me that he is currently breeding her. He told me that she is about 1100-1200 grams. I was just wondering if she actually produced about how many eggs she would produce? I personally dont breed until close to 2000g. Have any of you bred females that small and how many eggs did they produce? Thanks for your info.

2003 I had a 1250g female lay 5 eggs and in 2004 I had a 1290g female lay 6 perfect eggs.

1500g is a guideline for people new to the hobby so that they don't breed animals that are too small. Heck, I have a 2,660g female that I wouldn't DARE try this year. She's a 5.5 footer, but she's skinny as heck. But I have 3 1400g females that will probably go. Weight isn't the be-all-end-all. Its a guideline. After a few seasons, you'll be able to tell what animals are ready and which ones are best left for the following year.

Both weight and length should be considered. I have two smaller females I put into the breeding program this year. One is about 1500 grams and the smaller female is around 1200 grams. I did not plan to breed her but when she was palpated, I felt a small bump. Could be urate or something else, but since she was off-feed I thought I'd give it a try. I doubt much will happen but who knows. This is only her second winter.

I usually try and not breed until 1500 grams, but I do have a female that is just over 1200 grams that has 5 eggs in her. I think I read somewhere that a 1,000 gram female laid 4 good eggs. Thanks david

Last year I had several females that were just under 1000 grams before they ovulated I got 3 good eggs from 1 of them 4 good from another and 5 from the last. The one that had 5 eggs only weighed 680 grams after she laid, but the eggs weighed almost 100 grams each. All are doing well now and I beleve 2 to be gravid.
