Regurgitation....

fredhammes Feb 02, 2005 11:04 AM

I posted this in the Herp Health forum as well. Hoping to get some insight.

In all the time I have kept snakes, I have never had a problem with this. Now I have an adult female ball python who has regurgitated her last 2 meals.
I have had her for years, she has always been a decent eater. There have been no new herps introduced to my home in several months, and always are quarrantined. Her habitat has not changed.None of my other herps have done this, yet. I waited 2 weeks to feed again after her first time, but she did it again.
Should I be worried? Is there something I should do differently with her?

Thanks for any advice.

If it's just the last two meals, I would not worry greatly but I would be concerned. What are the details about the meals? Did you feed live? Were they frozen and if so, were they from the same package? Are the meals of appropriate size? Were the meals regurgitated immediately or later and if so how long after eating?

I would suggest a couple smaller meals. If nothing has changed it could be some odd anomoly. However, I have only had one snake regurgitate and she was a WC that could not be disturbed during feeding. If she was, it was spit out.

I feed f/t rats, that I buy from a reputable dealer. The 2 rats were from the same supplier, but different shipment. They are medium to large rats, which she is certainly capable of eating, and has been for years.
I did not see her regurgitate the rats, but I saw her swallow them. They were not simply spit out. The head and most of the fur seemed to be mostly digested, but the rest of the rat intact. I think it was about 24 to 30 hours after she ate the rat that it came back up. (Rather unpleasant.)

I bought a wc pastel female, she ate right away upon arrival (within a week) which is almost usually unheard of but the problem was she regurged 2 days later so i waited 2 weeks like you and 2 days later she regurged again i took her to my vet and she tested positive for worms and eggs i panacured her every 2 weeks for 6 weeks and she never regurged again it could be something maybe not from those 2 particular rats but maybe a past rat earlier in the year or something, maybe the rat in question was a leftover from a feeding in a dirty tank with another wc snakes poop in it then got on the rat that your snake ate and you got the worms if that makes any sense

also very important if she has regurged 2x you MUST rehydrate her b4 anymore feedings do this with pedialyte soaking and drinking very very important

Yes. Thank you. I'm on it.

Thank you for your quick replies.

Unfortunately the only herp vet for over 100 miles is an idiot. I'd rather eat all my snakes than to have him see them again!!Mostly, I just pray that I will not need a vet.

My rats come from RodentPro, and I have always been happy with the quality I get from them. Being that they are from 2 different shipments, I don't really suspect the rats. (Besides that all the other snakes seem fine.)

Each snake has it's own feeding container, and, like I said, no new herps since last year.

I think I will wait a bit before offering her food again.
