Animal Cops San Francisco

EricWI Feb 02, 2005 11:13 AM

Did anyone here see the episode with the owner of 25 snakes? A neighbor had ratted on him for owning "constrictor snakes" (which apparently is illegal in San Francisco). The guy had red-tail boas, sand boas, jungle carpets, ball pythons, womas, rainbow boas, etc. He ended up having to do community service.

A non herper friend of mine saw that episode. When I informed her today that I was going to get a kingsnake, I had to spend five minutes reassuring her that snakes (and tarantulas) are legal in California.
I emailed SF animal services inquiring about snake law and recieved a swift reply that "boa constrictors and pythons" were illegal in the city. She gave me a link to the law itself, but that site was down. Disgusting news, vague law, but at least the lady I contacted was quite polite.
I mean, it's one thing to freak out over the big five, but little sand boas??? Yeesh!
Do you know if the guy got his snakes back, or if they seemed healthy, or if they found new homes, or what happened? I didn't see the episode.

From what I know the law comes from a past mayor who had snake thrown into her car.

I am she there is more to it but who knows

It's a crying shame that poor lady had a snake thrown at her. I'm also sorry that she was probably terrified. But can't these lawmakers comprehend that someone who did something like that had to be a cruel thug who didn't give a s**t about the snake anyway? Could've been a firework as far as the assailant was concerned.
Damn vindictive laws like this just punish the law abiding and turn good citizens into criminals.
Pardon me for preaching to the choir here. Thanks for the back story.
