uroplatus pietschmanii?

Geckos_R_Me Feb 02, 2005 02:16 PM

I don't know much about the care of this uroplatus other than I think they like to be kept around 75 degrees. Is there any good caresheets anywhere on the internet about these guys? How big are they? Are they sort of in the middle when it comes to their size? Any info about these guys would be great. I know a few of you have them. I LOVE the looks of them and someday I definitely would like to get one. Thanks everybody!

well, good luck finding any caresheets, i really dont think there are any available. the worst part is that the uroplatus book gives almost no information, and the most helpful thing they could have given us the locality, but they mention that its being kept secret for whatever purpose, whether its to protect the species or whatever. but if they could have given a locality, then people could go ahead and try to get weather reports for whatever region they might be from...so since ive kept mine ive kept them as ive kept others, right around 72 degrees C, although i do remember hearing that they were possibly from a warmer region of madagascar, but i have never found out the truth of that or not.

as for the size, i would say they're definitely smaller than henkeli, definitely bigger than phantasticus, which would put them at the medium size range, probably closest in size to sikorae. now i remember reading somewhere that pietschmanni should be kept the same way as sikorae, and i think that was for their very basic similarity in size and appearance, plus ive heard pietschmanni used to actually come into the US as mossies at times. still, i think mossies might get just a tad bigger than pietschmanni, and i have only very recently gotten a pair of sikorae so i cant tell the size difference myself just yet, dont know if these sikorae will be growing more or not.

the best news is that the pietschmanni, at least the trio i have, are EXTREMELY hardy. like i said, i keep them at the same conditions temp and humidity-wise as all other uroplatus, but have heard rumors they come from warmer, drier regions. still mine have done very well and the only thing that i havent gotten them to do yet is breed. we'll see how it turns out. leah and mad_1234 should be able to chime in here as well, i know they have some.

Thanks for the info. It was really helpful and yeah the book is no help on how to care for the uroplatus pietschmanii. They sure are a neat gecko though! What do you feed yours and what size of enclosure do you have them in? Once again, thanks for all the information. It's greatly appreciated.

i feed mine large crickets with calcium dust, and they take em down like champs. i keep them in a 30 gal tall with cork bark wedged together at one side to simulate a tree trunk, then there are pothos and other vines draped over that. in the more open space, theres a large broad-leafed plants, not sure of the name, one of those rabbit ear plants, and some branches. the females usually like to sleep on the cork bark, while the male usually flops over a branch. heres the pic:

Wow! That's a beautiful setup. I'm sure they love it. Thanks for posting the picture and for all your help.

effective, great looking, yet not over done.

umop_apisdn Feb 03, 2005 05:27 PM

yea, thats actually the second setup i made for them...i started out with a big ficus in the middle. while that would have been suitable for satanics, it overcrowded the space and basically gave them no jumping space. the rabbit's ear i was talkin about isnt in that pic, but thats a pretty minor detail i added later. but yea they have plenty of glass to climb, love chilling on the bark, and i often find them climbing around and on top of the big plant.

and thanks for the compliments, part of why i love working with geckos so much is because i love seting up terraria!

nothing quite beats the look of a nice finished cage, ( except for finding eggs!)

Looks like you have a Caladium spp and and a Philodenron spp in there... The plants that is... if you were curious...
