Is it Unusual for a ball to lay in its water dish for long period?

syferaus Feb 02, 2005 03:07 PM

Hi, my friend and I have the same thing

our snakes, even though the temperatures are good, like to sit in their water dishes for days,

mine actually was getting cooled for breeding, but just recently in this last week been in his water dish for days now, he doesnt get out, and even when i pour more water in there, he still stays

is this unusual behavior, is there something wrong with him, i mean he is a healthy boy

i dont know if it has anythign to do with him being cooled, because my friend's snake does it and he is not being cooled but with his regular tempatures,

thanks for any advice,

There could be a few reasons for this.

1. Does your snake have an adequate hiding space? Some snakes will use their water dishes as hides if there isn't another one available.

2. What are the humidity levels in your tank? If it is too low your Ball may be trying to stay humid and hydrated by soaking. Humidity should be around 65-75%

3. Is he getting ready to shed? Although it sounded as though this has been an ongoing thing, but if not, maybe he is just about to shed.

Good luck!

do you us an under the tank heater? They can get really hot, I thought mine was ok till I got a temp gun and I found that the temps ran way too hot.

Also mites can also cause a snake to soak in a water dish so that might be something to keep an eye out for
