How Do I Bath My Iguanas?

sonic5115 Feb 02, 2005 03:12 PM

I have 2 Iguanas. They are about 20 inches long. Does anybody know the proper way to bath them, and how many times a week, and if they even like getting bathed????

Mine don't get handled much and thus are dificult to bathe due to thier freak outs when being handled(Adults) so about once every 2 weeks i grab em one at a time and place em in a tub 1/4 full of warm water. There's no need for me to risk my fingers to scrub off any dried fruit off thier faces since they put the tub into rinse cycle with thier running in circles trying to get out.
They do have a big plastic tub in the bottom of thier cage that they crap in which i wash out daily, so between the bi-weekly baths, the pond and spraying them with water before and after work thy stay pretty clean. You may want to be a little more thorough as yours are small and prone getting to mites.

I bathe my iguana everyday after he eats when i get home from school. he is shedding really well and he poops everyday in the tub and i let the water out and refill it..he usually poops b4 i even get the water filled. but yeah when he poops i refill it...then he sleeps in the water.. it is cute. he is really small though. but yeah it is good for them.. make the water a little warm but not hott and then it stimulates them to poop and it really helps them shed.. it says on a few websites that it is good to bath them.. well actually all the sites i have read about iggy's.. well good luck.. oh another thing fill the water only to about his head.. they shouldnt float, they should be able to touch the bottom of the tub and sit still because they will get too tired and it isnt good. leave them in there for a lil bit. good luck.. bye!

Fill your bath tub with one inch of warm water. Put gently your igs inside.Leave them alone without making movements that can scare them.Do that once a day but be careful with the bathroom temperture. If the water is warm but the bathroom is cold your igs will get a cold. They will soon get used to the water and will love to be bathed.NEVER use a soap. The soap makes the iguana skin more prone to be attacked by bacterias and THAT IS TRUE.

We have given Iggi a bath every day first thing, when we get her up. We put in warm (not hot) water up to their chest. Juvenile igs won't need much at first. Nothing is added to the water. If she is shedding, we gently help the shed come off with a Q tip. Never leave the igs unattended in the tub. After she poops in the water, we refill the tub and rinse her off, then we take her outside in our back yard to dry off in the sun. Instead of washing your hands after handling your iguana, we believe in washing your iguana before handling, LOL! Here is a picture of Iggi during bath time.

Basically, I just fill up the tub so the shallow (far) end of the tub is up to his shoulders. He goes all over and does fine.
I do not use soap and can not imagine that it would be good for them. I only recently started giving the baths (as my other posts indicate). But it is great not having to clean up in the cage, instead just opening the drain so that the poooooooo goes down.
Maybe because of the extra handling, but he also seems to be calming down ALOT since I started giving baths.
I have also noticed that his skin feels softer. And that the skin peels off alot better and faster while in the bath.
The baths just seem to be a great thing!!!!
