How old do males have to be for breeding?

UroJade Feb 02, 2005 05:11 PM

i've gotten mixed answers so im just looking for as many opions as possable
in your Opinion is size or age what i should be looking for?
i bought a male ,he's 7 months old, 15 and a half inches and 280 grams. and i have a breeding age female that i'd like to eventually breed him too
so should i wait till he's a certain size if so how long/heavy
or a certain age, how old
i dont want to breed him to early if it will harm him in any way but if he'll be perfectly fine to breed once he hiys a certain size or age than i wouldnt have to wait for no reason

Males breed sooner than females. If the female is too much larger than he is shewill dominate him and you won't be sucessfull though. I would wait untill he is a little bigger.... around 350g and see if the size differance is small enough try them out. The main thing you want to avoid is that males will still eat but not nearly asmuch during breeding and that is something a growing beardie can't really afford to do... I would say give it a couple more months.... but that's my opinion... You could putthem together and it'd work...

IMHO - the responsible thing to do is wait until he is fully grown, to ensure that you are introducing good genetics into future generations of beardies; there are too many home-breeders out there who pair up any old dragons just to breed them for the sake of it.

That said, I have no wish to judge anyone on this site, least alone somebody responsible enough to ask for advice first. I would suggest 18mo, at least 18" and 400g, same as the females, for the above reasons. I have also heard third hand reports of juvenille males being sexually mature, but being injured by the larger females, and also of inability to retract the hemipenes at younger ages.

Good luck with your future breeding.

I think the only thing is his mother was 600 grams and he seems to already be large for his age, if he gets much bigger than my female will that present any problems while breeding?
