Breeding mealies and crickets

chubbyfrogmom Feb 02, 2005 06:32 PM

I was thinking of trying my hand at raising the food my gecko and frogs eat. Which would be easier? Can they be kept in a container outside? I don't have alot of room and my husband isn't going to like the idea of raising bugs in the house. Thanks in advance.

are way easier. no noise, they don't climb or jump, don't stink, etc. I breed mine in a rubbermaid dishpan. throw some fresh veggies at them, and voila!

Please don't use just rolled oats and sawdust.

check Leolovers webpage for a great gutload recept, just google that site. You want your mealies to be the most healthy, spoiled insects on this planet otherwise your leos won't get the proper nutrition.

I mix the vit and calc powders into my substrate and rotate various veggies and fruit.

I hate crix but if bred properly is the more appropriate diet, and allows your leos some exercise.

Good luck

Mealworms are very easy. Neglect seems to make them thrive better. I just put about 500 worms in a big shoebox with some baby cereal and put a mixture of potatoes, carrots, and the occasional apple in with them. You really only need to check on them to take the old food out and put more cereal in.
