"Greenish" Eastern

MartinWhalin1 Feb 02, 2005 08:47 PM

Looking through some pictures from last year. I don't think I ever posted these. This is my favorite milksnake. Totally weird coloration. He's the only one I've found that looks like that in the area he's from. It's been suggested that it's genetic but I HIGHLY doubt that. I just think it's cool.

The ring around the neck makes it even more strange.

These guys were found in the same place at different times.

I hope you kept it...

I know Jeff Schofield had a green one, and he was going to attempt to see if the coloration was genetic..but if I'm correct, he has gotten rid of all his snakes.

Nice snake though, worth keeping.

Thanks. Jeff's green milksnake was something different than what I've got. His was all around green and may be genetic. I'm keeping him. he's been with me for about a year and a half.

I'm very new to this board, but was wondering what you meant by the coloration not being genetic - do these guys develop color dependant on other factors?

Thanks for indulging my curiosity!

"I'm very new to this board, but was wondering what you meant by the coloration not being genetic - do these guys develop color dependant on other factors?"

I wasn't clear enough. What I meant to say was that it probably wasn't a simple recessive gene. Meaning I couldn't breed this snake to one of its offspring and expect half of the clutch to look like the father. It would probably take several generations.
The reason I don't think it is a simple mutation is because every other color on the snake is typical except for the saddles. It's not that big of a stretch for a brown saddled snake to turn up greenish occasionally.
