hbluedevilh Jul 06, 2003 01:45 PM

Ok, I went in to feed my mantellas and noticed a couple of globs of eggs!!! I am to excited and I an very happy that I finally got eggs! Do they look fertile? I dont care if they are or not I know my froggies are happy and now I am very happy!!

What about the tadpoles? I know they eat spirunela (sp?) I have placo pellets and I can go to the store and buy some of the spirunela (sp?) What else should I get? I have several clear containers that will be setup....Ages water?? or Spring water from the store??

Thanks,

Lu

I am sorry to inform you that those eggs aren't fertile. If you find them on top they generally won't be fertile. Are these from Golden mantellas? They will burrow and deposit their eggs and then a male will back down the hole and fertilize the eggs. She was probably very egg bound and had to get rid of them as there were no suitable laying spots where she could burrow and deposit the eggs. You can try and sink a cap bottle in the ground with a bit of wet moss in the botton and she might back down into that and deposit eggs and then the male will fertilize them. Unlike darts the male won't go and fertilize them later so if he isn't with her at the time chances are they won't be fertilized.

Thats what I was thinking also since they where not all together. There where a couple of globs near each other. I have two other females ready to lay so I will do what you said and maybe I'll get a better chance next time. I am just glad I know they are laying eggs.

Thanks,

Lu

Hi,

Congrats! I remember when you ordered those guys from captive bred specialties with the intent to breed them. Unfortunatly those eggs aren't fertile. They were not freshly laid either because they have taken in a lot of water to turn into a big blob. Fertile eggs that are as old as yours would show signs of tadpoles developing inside and they would still be a bright white in color rather than a creamish brown color. If you have males in the tank it isn't uncommon for them not to fertalize the eggs. My female has laid 8 clutches of eggs in the past year and only 1 was fertalized unfortunatly. Finding eggs does mean one thing though, that the conditions you are providing for your mantellas are good and that they are being fed very well. Keep us updated if you find more. Good luck!

Devin,

Thanks for the reply. I will be removing the eggs today and I will be adding more suitable lay areas in the tank for the females. I have two other females ready to pop and hopefully the eggs will get fertilized. I found an easy trick to getting these guys to lay and I hope that it works everytime. I will keep ya posted. Thanks again!
