piebalds & genetics..

lovinPiebalds Feb 03, 2005 12:35 AM

What would the results be if I were to breed the following;

a 100% Het piebald male to a normal female?

a 100% Het piebald male to a 50% Het piebald female?

Does it make a difference in results if the mother has the stronger piebald gene?

Will I get any piebalds?

There are a few sites to help you with alot of your questions.

http://www.geneticswizard.com/f_Genetics_Querybuilder.asp

On thisone, you type in the combination you have and then get the results. With the 50%, thats exactly what it is. Either it is het or not, and the only sure way to tell is to breed it out.

Also there is Rick's site with a ton of helpfull information. If yo go to the genetics link on this site you will see alot of what you are asking as well. He actually has alot of other useful info on there, and even shows some videos of sexing a ball python under the general infromation section and then selecting tips and tricks section.

Heres the link: http://www.ballboutique.com/

Alot of breeders have a ton of stuff to help you on your way.

Hope this has helped.

I hope you follow the links that 5star gave you and learn more. In the meantime-

a 100% Het piebald male to a normal female?
- you will get all 50% possible het for piebalds. They will all look normal, so you won't know if they are het or not. Statistically, half will be het, half normal, but statistics aren't perfect.

a 100% Het piebald male to a 50% Het piebald female?
- This one depends entirely on whether the female is het or not. 50% chance, as above, just means that you have a 50/50 chance, statistically, that you have a het. If she is a het, you will get an average of 1/4 piebalds, 1/2 hets, and 1/4 normals. Since you cant tell hets from normals, the normal looking ones will be "66% possible hets"
If she is not a het, then again you will get 50% het babies, all looking normal.

Hope this helps.

You seem to be under a misconception about the nature of "50% het." It's not a "weaker gene." In fact, the animal isn't 50% anything. It might be het or it might be normal -- we just don't know.

Suppose somebody tosses a coin and it lands but you aren't able to see the result. You could call the result "50% heads," but the fact of the matter is that it's either heads or tails. 50% het doesn't actually exist any more than 50% heads does.

The results of breeding a 50% het depend on whether the animal is really a het or a normal. If you breed her and get an albino out of her, then she's het and you can remove the 50%. If you breed her a few times and never get an albino you can conclude that she's most likely a normal.

that is, if you breed her a few times to an albino or a het and don't get any albinos you can conclude she's most likely a normal. Breeding her with a normal certainly won't produce any albinos regardless.

and by albinos he means piebalds....
