Does anyone have any idea of the ratio of males to females in a given group of eggs?

bugmamma Feb 03, 2005 11:16 AM

Hello there... I was wondering if with cresties its a 50/50 thing like with humans or if the temps the eggs are kept at that determines the %age of males vs females? Or some other thing?

there has been numerous temperature experiments, some yielding more females, some equal, and some more males. however, at average temps, its GENERALLY, please note that i am saying generally, not always, or most of the time, just in general, it is more female dominated.

I think with cresteds it's been proven that lower temps will produce a higher ratio of females to males. Males will still be hatched out though. I incubate at fluctuating room temps, 70's and normally get about 50/50.

Hopefully someone will be able to quote the actual temps in the new Rhacodactylus book, I don't have mine handy, I think it's something like 68 to 72 will give 2:1 and in some cases 3:1 females to males.

Nothing has been proven so it there will be no definite outcome mentioned in the book. Lower temps. may sometimes get more females, but others have tried lower temps and have produced the same amount if not more males. As far as I have read it is ALMOST just the luck of the draw.

P.S. what I just wrote is a paraphrased answer I got when I asked the same question...Don't bash me if I'm wrong, I'll find out who it was that gave me that answer and you can e-mail them if you want! -Joe

Yeh now I think about it the book says that the higher female ratios have been reported, not proven, with lower temp incubation. So fair enough
