Anyone had experience with Angolans or Bloods? How do they compare to BPs ?

toshamc Feb 03, 2005 01:06 PM

I am toying with the idea of picking up either an Angolan or Blood Python, but wanted to see from other ball experts how they compare (to BPs) in ease of care, temperment, etc. Anyone have expereince with both? I was also considering a GTP.

Thanks,

I have both. I the angolans are another great animal. Like the ball pythons, they are friendly and tolerant of human handling. I find that they are a little more outgoing and a lot less head shy. They don’t take the balling position, but are instead very active when handled. I love both the ball pythons and the Angolans.

I keep blood pythons. They are nippy when they are younger but mellow out as they age. I keep them the exact same way as a ball python.......just a bigger rubbermaid of course.

Bloods & short-tails are hands-down my FAVORITE PYTHONS!!!!! Awesome personalities, great feeders, just fun, fun snakes to keep. And no, they're not rocket science, they're not overly prone to respiratory infections (unless one is just an absolute idiot at keeping them)...they're giant snake personality in a not-so-giant package.

Many python species are nippy as babies - bloods just seem to have a dark cloud reputation hanging over them from the untrusting & sometimes explosive temperaments of WC animals...but the same could be said about a lot of WC snakes!

Angolans are wonderful snakes as well - once again, great personalities, hardy, great feeders & easy to keep.

But I don't lie awake at night dreaming of balls or Angolans. Stick a fork in me, I am DONE! When it comes to bloods - they are just the greatest snakes, PERIOD!

Here's my superfly sexy dreamsnake het-albino male, "Rojo Loco"

He's my other "one in a million"...you know..besides Kevin.

Drop me a line if you ever want to talk bloods!

Kara,

That is the badest Red Blood I have EVER SEEN!!! If they all looked that good Ball Pythons might have a harder time in the popularity contest!

Good luck with them...

i agree with the bloods having a bad rep because of the wc snakes being brought in. they are agressive. i have raised cb bloods that were very friendly and easy to keep. i have not aquired a angolan YET. big difference-price!! several thousand for a angolan. but beautiful and interesting snakes. i want one. tim

The Angolans have to be one of my favorite snakes!!! We keep ours the same way as we do the ball pythons. They seem to have more personality than the balls do and they are very nosey....

The angolans rock and are my most expensive "pet". I love the shorttails too and I think the difference is purely preference. I like the "fat" stubby look and the overall laidback and docile nature of the shorttails. There is nothing like my big old slugs. However, my angolan never seems to stop and the feel of hte skin is hard to explain. My vote would be to get...both! How else could I answer.

I think I've been convinced, I'll pick up a blood now (since my budget has already been busted on balls and they are cheaper) and this summer after I've replenished my funds, I'll see about picking up the angola. Thanks again!

And if you start a breeding business you can name it "Pool Skimmer Reptiles".
