A good catch...

Exotics by Nature Feb 03, 2005 02:45 PM

Just thought I'd take a second to share something a little interesting to me...

I have been breeding this female since 2002 and she has ALWAYS been a monster! Great feeder and a great breeder but she never gave me a single egg. Last year I had a theory that she had been cycling very early or very late and that was the reason that I kept missing her. This season I decided to breed her before all others when my male Piebald started breeding in October. I was amazed when I palpated her in the middle of October and felt huge follicles! She bred 3-4 times in the early part of October which was about 2 months before I had ever even tried to breed her in the past.

This morning she laid 11 good eggs and no bad ones... I guess the theory was correct...

Good luck to all of you this season! Our best wishes to all!!

Jim,

My Red Axanthic male has bred an Orange Ghost as well as a Pastel female. I'm not sure if the Orange Ghost female will produce but I'm hopeful that the Pastel female will. I've also bred a Red Axanthic female to my Lesser Platinum male. She is developing follicles now and I'm hopeful that she will produce. She is a 2002 animal that weighs in around 2800 grams. Other than that I just have normal females bred by my Red Axanthic and Het Red Axanthic males.

It's all upto the females now!
How is your little guy doing?

Sean, that's using your head. I sometimes start trying them as early as September myself often times they will breed (especially my older females that were imported as babies years ago)but I haven't really noticed that it "pushed" them ahead on the laying dates (as yours obviously did), however they would produce regardless, perhaps I too would have missed the "window" had I waited till the "standard" season which starts in late Nov. or early December (possibly as late as January for some breeders). I live in the upper midwest so it starts cooling off here about mid September. Anyway thanks for the post man, it was interesting reading , take care Sean. PS How's the albino females doing? Thanks for the post! Those female Albinos are all doing well and growing like weeds... thanks again for them!

Good luck this season...

Hi Sean;

That is a good looking big clutch of eggs!
The male het Piebald I got from you little over a week ago is doing very well and ate a f/t adult mouse the third day I had him.
Looking forward to getting a het Piebald female from you as well.

Rob.

Its great to hear that your male is doing well for you. Feed him lots and he will grow like a weed! Hopefully your female is hidden inside of this clutch of eggs. You never know... even with 11 eggs I've had terrible luck with ratios in the past.

Fingers crossed! Talk to you soon...

Hi Sean;

He ate another f/t adult mouse last night (six days after the first one). When I run out of the frozen mice I have (I bought 10 of them), I'll see if he'll switch back to f/t rats. Lets hope you'll have a good number of females in your new 100% het Piebald clutch!

Rob.
