Hi all,

I've been researching poison dart frog vivariums for awhile now, and was wondering why the false-bottom setup isn't applied to snake keeping more often for species that require high humidity.

A false bottom is basically a sturdy mesh floor elevated a few inches off of the cage bottom. The substrate is placed on top of the mesh, and excess water from misting, etc. drains through the substrate and into the reservoir underneath the substrate. This reservoir is filled with about an inch of water, which is siphoned out regularly to keep it fresh.

Here's the benefits for a snake cage, as far as I can see:

-No more blistering if substrate is kept too wet; excess moisture simply drains out.

-Mold is reduced since the substrate is never soaked, just kept consistently moist.

-Humidity is able to be kept more constant, as water is present underneath the mesh layer.

-Removal of snake wastes remains the same as with any other style cage.

Has anyone tried this before? Do you think it would be worth a shot?
