If you have a choice, use a mesh that is large enough for the cham (what species?) to put its toes through easily, but not so large it can get its head through. When a cham feels stressed or wants to get to trees it can see outside the cage it may push its head against the mesh repeatedly trying to get out. You don't want it to get stuck or damage its casque. Do you want the mesh to allow wild insects to get in? If this is not important you could use 2 layers on the cage...the larger mesh on the inside to allow your cham to safely climb on it, and an outer covering of flexible window screen that might discourage the cham from trying to escape and damage its snout.

metal screen works?> it dont need to be covered with any plastic?

I should clarify that. Some metal mesh is made of woven wire which pretty smooth and works fine. If the mesh was galvanized after being woven the galvanizing surface can be rough and does have sharp edges. That is why we try to find the coated stuff. If you can't get coated mesh you could at least paint it with a couple of coats of non-toxic latex paint. It will help cover sharp edges.

my dad bough a 1/2x1/2 mesh that would be too big right?
if that is too big i will buy normal screen mesh.

the cage is for a veiled

excuse me for butting in but as I was looking for other info found this and thought it might be helpful. I have not built my own cage so I cannot back any of it up but it seems to go over the pros and cons of a variety of material. Go to link and look under Housing...

it says that hardware cloth screen is bad, window screen is bad for large species and fiber glass is bad because the cage will be outdoors.

what should y use then?
