The Eggs are here! Questions...

eve_scotland Feb 03, 2005 05:55 PM

I awoke this morning 2 2 little perfectly shaped eggs in my egg box! They have since been moved 2 my incubator and are at a stable temp of 82, i was just wondering when should candeling be done? And also do the eggs grow in size? This is my first breeding season and its hard 2 imagine a baby gex coming out of the little eggs! The eggs are not hard but kinda "leathery" does this change? I have the eggs in moist perilite in a tupperware box , should the lid be on with holes in it of are holes necessary?

Sorry 2 be such a pain, and asking so many questions - just wanna get it right!

Don't feal like you are being a pain to anyone, we love to help out fellow leo keepers. Ask away.

Thats great you have some eggs, they will not grow. The only time you will see any growth is about 5 days before they hatch, the eggs will get swollen. They should be hard and chalky, soft thin eggs most likly are not fertile.

You can candle in a few days, you might be able to see the red ring even before that, I can.

The eggs are small, you won't believe how small they are when they hatch!

Ill try to find the candling site I used to look at.

gook luck

Yes congrats on the eggs. The eggs do absorb water and grow until they hatch. The eggs are softshelled and stay that way. A fertle egg will have the feel of a stale marshmellow(firm) while a non fertle egg will feel more like a water sack. when candling a fertle egg will have a red to pinkish glow to it and you may even see blood veins while a non fertle one will have a yellow glow. I usually start candling a few days after they are layed. Incubate all eggs till they die though, egg shrivels up, colapse etc. cause sometimes candling can decieve you. You should use a lid on your egg container. Whether or not you use holes in it is your decision. I personally use 5-6 pin holes plus open the egg container every fews days for a good air exchange. hope some of this helps and good luck
