Paleosuchus Palbebrosus

hraaij Jul 06, 2003 03:29 PM

Hello.

Is it possible to keep 2 paleosuchus specimens with not too small turtles in one enclosure?

Anybody any experience on this?

Thanks in advance.

Hans

Maybe. I have seen it done in very large enclosures with mata mata turtles at zoos before however it seems a little risky to me. I think it would be wiser not to risk it.

Most water turtles are aggressive feeders as well as notorious toe-biters. Unless the enclosure is very large, meaning the animals can be well apart from one another and each in it's own micro-habitat, I would strongly advise you don't.

The zoo was smart... a matamata is probably the one turtle in the world that couldn't bite a croc's toes (they have no beak). But a matamata can get up to 24 inches, which is a lot of bioload. And of course they eat nothing but live fish.

I expect to get some matamatas in a couple of weeks. never thought about the possebility to house them with my palps. do you really think it would be wise to house them together, not for the caimans sake but I tend to think the caiman will take a bite off the long neck sooner or later...

I wouldn't for the exact reason you said. Seems like an easy way to lose an expensive turtle.
