Ventral scale deformity in cal kings

zach_whitman Feb 04, 2005 03:01 AM

I hatched out my first cal king babies this past summer. When they hatched I noticed that about 3/4 of the way down the body, maybe 2 inches from the vent, several of the belly scales had a crease down the middle of them. At first I thought that this might be the mark left over where the yolk sac was absorbed into the abdominal cavity. The babies are now six months old, growing like weeds, and generally appear happy and healthy, but the line on their stomach has not gone away. Today while handling the mother (she is rather flighty so I don't usually mess with her) I noticed that she too has a much more faint remenant of a crease in the same spot as the babies. Does anyone know if this is a serious deformity? Do you think that it is irresponsible of me to breed these snakes?
thanks
zach

As you thought, it is the mark left over where the yolk sac was absorbed into the abdominal cavity.
