Sulcata sexing (photo difference)

Buzztail1 Jul 06, 2003 03:41 PM

Several years ago, when I first came here, I asked how to tell the difference between a male and a female sulcata.
There were lots of responses but none of them were very definitive. One of my favorites was to hang around and wait for the male to feel like flashing me!!!
Well, we have had two females for years now whose anal scutes showed some variation and we were just not sure that one of them wasn't in fact a male. We just recently got two new sulcatas as a rescue (truly a rescue - we paid nothing for them). And one is DEFINITELY a male (yes, he flashed us!). So, I thought that for those poor folks who are still trying to figure out what they have, I would post a comparison picture.
I hope this helps someone out there. I sure could have used it when I first started out.

PS - Photographed only to show the differences between male and female sulcatas. They were on their backs only for a quick photo. Size - both were twelve and a half inch plastrons and weighed twelve and a half pounds. KHB

Carl... You've been on this forum long enough to know that you can't tell gender at that size and weight

Here's another photo for reference. 12" - 14 pounds - female.

shows pronounced V and large (dirty) tail tucked to the
right inside.
People wanting to sex their sulcatas often ask for help
with very small ones, and the shells change and vary enough
that it just can't be determined.

don't you think? The V got much wider over the last few
years on him. I would not put much money on this bet still.
