odds of getting a female from petco?

ndolson Feb 04, 2005 11:51 AM

I havent had my bp sexed yet, I am looking for someone in the Kansas City area who can do it. Anyways, I see the female bp's going for more $$$ than males...so I was wondering what the odds were that I could get a female from Petco. I know it was captive bred, but that is all. I bought it when it was a baby.

Opinions?

If you got it from petco then it's either a cheap import or a cb male. They have a tendency to buy animals they can make more of a profit on and females are just too cheap. But sometimes they can get some cb snakes that the owners just couldn't get rid of so you may have gotten lucky - find someone to sex it!

We got this little male double ringer from Petco.

ndolson Feb 04, 2005 02:21 PM

maybe i should post a picture of mine and see if i accidentally got some sort of morph and didnt realize it. mine looks normal to me though.

dawgball79 Feb 11, 2005 03:09 AM

What exactly is a ringer or double ringer? I just got the genetics down now this. and what make s this a ringer in this pic? thanks

ndolson Feb 04, 2005 12:41 PM

Yeah, I figured it was most likely a male. I am almost sure it is, going by the stubbiness of its tail (although I know thats not dead on accurate) combined with the fact that females are more expensive. I currently only have that snake, but I am going to be buying some albino hets so I was seeing if I could work the "normal" into the mix later down the road to my benefit.

Problem is, I dont know anyone near me that sexes snakes.

Here is the link to the Kansas City Herpeticlogical Society - They should be able to hook you up with someone that can sex your snake.

Thanks for the link. I've actually tried contacting someone who is a member there that runs the site a couple of times, and I havent heard anything back from them. Maybe I should just go to a meeting sometime.

I worked there for 5 years before and through college and they specialize in reptiles. We bred albinos and they also now have het for pieds. If the owner is there he can sex it, but he can be hard to find there sometimes. I'm there every friday picking up rodents. I will be there at about 5:45 to 6ish this evening and I can sex it for you if you want. Just let someone at the counter know your meeting Jason and they will let me know when I get there. Anyway, it is the best place in KC to find reptiles and supplies. Lawrence KS has a real nice place also, if you ever make it out that way!

Thanks, I will definately check them out when I decide to sex it. Today is a nice warm day and would be ideal for it, but I am busy today unfortunately. I live in Blue Springs. I will probably wait until March or even April before taking my snake out of the house.

BTW...do you know if they have any 100% het for albino bp's there? I'd be very interested if so. You might drop a bug in their ear while you are up there if you read this in time and remember

Thanks

They don't have any right now but will have some in a couple months when the '05s start to hatch out. They also have some good connections to other breeders and if there is anything you want they don't currently have, they can get it in for you.

I wouldnt be in a place to purchase a pair of hets for a couple months still, so that might work out perfectly.

FerrisBueler Feb 04, 2005 02:58 PM

Hey! I live in Southern KC Missouri. Theres a shop down there that I go to called Waldo Pets. I helped out in reptiles on Wednesday, and I looked at all the pythons and boas. I'm going back today maybe to get one of my pythons sexed, and get one of theirs sexed and purchased.

ndolson Feb 04, 2005 03:39 PM

I know where thats at...isnt it off of wornall road? If someone competent is there that can do it, I just might make it there. Someone from the kansas city herpetologicaly society offered to do it if i bring my snake to the meeting in march. what kinds of snakes do they have at the waldo shop?

J35J Feb 04, 2005 03:55 PM

Uuggghhh....Waldo Pets. Thats all I can say about them!!

Overpriced not very well taken care of reptile section is what I've seen of them. Not to mention some of the worst customer service you can get!! At least that is how I've seen it and have been told the same from others that have been there. I won't ever go back.

M n R-Reptile Feb 04, 2005 03:51 PM

they are being kept by Bill Brant for his own use ( he supplies PetCo), or he sells them from his list in female lots. Sells all the males (3-1 ratio on ch babies) to Petco.
Petco does not carry wc import balls anymore. They only sell ch babies.

so its pretty much a guarantee that I have a male then? I figured he was mainly because his tail comes to such an abrupt and stubby end.

FerrisBueler Feb 04, 2005 04:25 PM

I love it at Waldo Pets. They are more into the fish than anything else, as far as I can tell. They don't take the best care of their reptile I admit, but I'll still buy from them. I know most of the people there personally.

Right now...as of snakes they have LOTS of corns, and hmm...probably a dozen WC ball pythons, I think they have 1 red-tail left (1 got sold right after we fed them), 2 retics, and a blood python.
