Water for Automatic Misters

Bill97 Feb 04, 2005 12:18 PM

Hi,

I'm a newbe to the group and to owning a Chameleon. I am looking into getting an automatic mister and I'm wondering how/if you control the temperature of the water. I use warm water when I mist right now, so do I need to get some kind of heater for a mister?

I have a young male veiled cham (he is about 5 1/2 inches from nose to vent) and I've had him for about 4 weeks. He is in a 2x2x3 screen enclosure. His basking spot runs 95 to 100 degrees and the rest of the cage is runs 75 to 85 (depending on the location). I have a 24 inch Reptisun 5.0 plus another 18 inch non UVB bulb. The humidity ranges from 50 to 75 percent with 3 live plants in the enclosure me misting 2 to 3 times per day.

Thanks for your help.
Bill

If the water reservoir for the mister sits in the same room as the cages, it won't be overly cold. You could heat the reservoir with a submersible aquarium heater. Make sure it sits near the bottom so it doesn't get exposed when the water level drops. If you are going to plumb it directly into your house water you could mix hot and cold togther like a sink. When I first got my Rainmaker system I heated the 5 gal reservoir. But, it didn't really seem necessary as the chams were not sprayed directly by the mist and didn't seem to avoid it. Heating that much water will take a lot of energy, but that's what I would suggest.

Thanks, Carlton. I was thinking of using an aquarium heater, but I'm afraid of ruining it by letting the water run too low.

I've also considered using one of those "under tank" heaters that are usually used for snakes, but that seems a little too scary.

The water tank will be in the same room as the enclosure, so I think that I might try filling it with hot water and see how long that stays warm. . .

Thanks for your help! I'll let you know what I find out.

There are some automatic misters that keep the water hot. I forgot the page but i'll look into it. I'm pretty sure it's on the cham forums, i'll check.

Hey, thanks for the information, however I'm looking for a mister. I think that this is a humidifier and I'm looking for a mister so that I won't need to had mist the cage.

Thanks for the specifics on the humidifier, because I might be considering one of those in the futer

Well, what people do is they put some PVC pipe where the mist comes out and lead it over the cage. There's pictures of setups on the forums. It's actually quite brilliant. =-)

I think there is some confusion here about what is meant by a mister. He's looking for a system that sprays water droplets large and heavy enough to create dripping foliage for drinking, not looking for a humidifier that releases a fine fog of water vapor that raises the humidity level of the air only. Not the same thing. Warm mist humidifiers (or vaporizers) can be a problem because the tank that stores the water becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. A MISTING SYSTEM uses a high pressure water pump to spray water that is warmed in a separate reservoir such as a 5 gallon bucket. You can heat this water source separately. Is that clearer?

Dumb thought that i've had....wrap a couple of coils of 1/4 inch or so copper tubing around the basking light hood before going to the mist nozzle to scavenge off the excess heat that is being wasted going up into the air.

just a thought....
