Missing finger and temp issues.

sassiebrat43 Jul 06, 2003 03:50 PM

I just bought a few new jfb newts. after i put them in the tank i noticed that one was missing a finger. is there anything i can do to help him heal?

i also have trouble keeping my tank water as cool as it should be during the summer. my apartment doesn't have a/c so it can get pretty warm in here. the newt i've had for over four years seems to do pretty well, he just spends more time out of the water. a few summers ago i alternated frozen 2liter bottles in the tank, but it was a round the clock job and it seemed like it might have caused more stress than benefit (because the water would get really cool really fast, then slowly warm back up, then get really cool really fast, over and over, multiple times a day.) can i hope that the two new ones will be fine with the temp too, or is there something i can do?

oh and (just because it's cute) sam hasn't had a tank mate in a year and a half and he's never seemed that social with any other newts i've had so i was a little nervous about how they'd all get along. the first few days all three of them hung out, sitting right next to each other on a log. today they're all kind of doing their own thing, but i think they're still getting along.

Keep the water clean (low bacterial counts) and feed a varied healthy diet (lots of live foods) and the injury will heal fine.

What is the temperature? Although they prefer cooler temperatures, these newts can withstand higher temps (high 70sF) for shprt periods of time. You're right that constant changing the water temperature is likely to be stressful.
