High Humidity Related to RI in Black Milk?

jsrocket Feb 04, 2005 02:29 PM

My female black milk has a RI, I believe it was caused by the humidity being too high in her tank.

She has been carefully kept at the recommended temp. for the species (68 - 75 f), so I know it's not a heating issue. The humidity was up to 87 percent. I have put her in a different tank with 55 percent humidity, and she is improving (no longer mouth breathing).

Could the humidity have caused the RI?

She seems to be getting better, so hopefully the whole antibiotic/injection subject will not be necessary

I'm not super familiar with milk snake husbandry but it seems a little on the cool side as well. Check the milk snake forum on the specifics. Either way I would add a hot spot into the mid-80's. Remember that a fever is an important defense against pathogens and reptiles attain this be using exterior warmth. If this snake is a recent addition to your collection than it is quite possible that it has been battling a low grade RI all along and is just now succumbing to it.

You've made a step in the right direction in trying to improve the husbandry. If improvement isn't complete than continue with a vet visit (ie culture ect)
