FREAK SNAPPER- DIDN"T FEED HIM AND GREW HUMONGOUS

ripthesnapper Feb 04, 2005 04:48 PM

I got my snapper hatchling in april 2004, I took great care of him until i went off to college in august. I told my parents to get feeder fish for him once a week, apparently they did it once or twice but then stopped. I was pissed. I arrived home this weekend planning to throw out my dead snapper, I picked him up and he was a live, plus he was 4 times the size as of when I first got him. What in the hell happened???

I have no idea, sorry. But I am disappointed that no one else has ventured a theory either! I thought this an interesting conundrum and was anxiously awaiting a reply!

this may not be what you wanted to hear, but have you considered the possibility that maybe they let him die and stuck another one in the tank from the petstore before you found out?
a snapper would likely suffer few ill effects from a fast like that, but he certainly wouldn't quadruple in size in that short span of time, even if he was being fed regularly.
just smells fishy to me

no, if u knew my parents they are not sensitive at all to situations like that, they wouldnt replace my turtle if it was dead, they would just tell me its dead and to get rid of it because it would stink up the place. Plus, as a hatchling, my turtle was nipped on his tail by a crayfish and he has the same nip mark there, so i know it's there. Thanx 4 the investigation tho

Why dont you find him another home before you go back to college as your parents arent going to care for it.
When you graduate college and start making money dont ever give them a penny for neglecting your pet .

I had 17 hatchlings that hatched in September and started eating in December. They now are at least 10 times as heavy as when they hatched.

To reach this size they ate every day from December until now, and they ate alot.

It seems like someone was feeding your turtle (alot), or it was not the same turtle.

In this area small turtles are not sold at pet stores. I do see them advertized online.
