Feeding Fish?

wombat Feb 05, 2005 12:30 AM

What are the issues pertaining to feeding hogs a long term diet of fish?

I've read that in nature they eat about 50% toads/frogs, and the rest is rodents or invertebrates (would that be insects or worms, or both?)

Are there any benefits/drawbacks to mixing food types?

My new m/f pair of '04 westerns have just been here a week- the male who is much bigger is eager for mice, has eaten twice, the female, who is smaller, doesn't like them so far. I tried her with a "rosy" minnow and sluuuurp she chowed that down.

My game plan is to work to switch her to mice, although I'm just glad she will eat something! But in the meantime, is there any harm in providing her with a steady fish diet?

Thanks-

I started my Eastern Hog on Goldfish and went on scenting live pinkies with them. Now I'm scenting f/t pinkies and he's eating them with no problem. Using Goldfish to scent pinkies works for me. Goldfish are not expensive. I never tryed it on my Westerns. It might work. Just be glad you hog is eating something. I don't see the harm in feeding them fish every now and then.

Fed fish to mine quite a bit when she was little, it got her eating when nofhing else would. Now I scent hoppers with tuna water and she is doing great. I have not had a feeding issue with her in ages.
