HELP BUILD NESTING BOX!!!!!

lacrosseboss18 Feb 05, 2005 11:15 AM

Ive been reading a lot about how to build a nesting box but i still have a few questions.
I have my female in a large freestanding dog cage. I want to use a rubbermaid tub. What media do you all find best. I have been reading a 50% / 50% mixture of potting soil and play sand...
my biggest issue is how much in total do i use. How much should it all weigh. Do i use 10-15 30 lbs of each. Should it total 150 pounds...?

How does everyone keep theirs warm. Should i keep a light over the cover or a heat pad under the bin. Can you also show me pictures of your set ups.

Where should i place the hole. On the top or on the top on the side.

Maybe someone can lay out plans very simply.

I also do not plan to keep the eggs.
Thank you
Joey

Are you breeding or is this just an unfertile clutch?

No they are or should be fertile. But i had not planned to have babies. I adopted her not too long ago.
I will take all the proper percautions to make it so the eggs dont hatch in a inappropriate place.

So you're going to let her lay the eggs, then throw them away?

Well i plan to freeze them for 24 hours before discarding them.

Tor038505 Feb 05, 2005 05:58 PM

Why not incubate them and hatch them?

I dont have the time to give to them. I would love to but at this point in time i can not. There is also so many on the marcket today that need homes. I dont know if i would be able to find homes for all of the babies. Nor do i have the space for them all.

I feel bad enough keeping my guy n girl locked up for the duration of thier lives!Never getting to run along a hot sandy beach, never getting to climb a huge tree and bask in the brightest uv light around. No ocean swimming sessions! I'd feel like an asshole bringing 20 or so more in to this artificial world of plastic steel and dead trees, where the only view(if thier lucky) will be out your window. wow! whata viev! I take my yearly lay of eggs and throw em out back for the racoons. They love em. And NO. I don't feel bad. I feel like i just did em a favour. At the same time i can't help but wonder what they taste like scrambled with bacon and toast

Well, first i'd have to ask you not to use the profanity. I have my little cousin here and she just asked me what that meant.

i'll quit talking about this subject as it's prone to make me mad and say bad things. good day

Because there are thousands of abandoned, rescued iguanas in hundreds of rescues throughout the country that are in need of loving homes. Why would anyone want to contribute to the already overwhelming problems involved in rehabilitating these lizards, socializing them, and then trying to find appropriate homes for them?? We currently have 37 Green Iguanas here, most of them waiting for adoptive parents to come along and spoil them for the rest of their lives. I can't take any more right now ( and there are dozens still in need) and I know that other rescues are full too. Is that a good enough reason?

I don't live where you live, so don't use me as a subject for force. Here in Alabama there are VERY few iguanas. We have to have them brought from other states to have them here. I was just wondering because I didn't understand why he would do that, now I do. I was seeing that as a form of reptile abortion, i'm against abortion all by itsself. I don't understand why you would breed then kill. Sorry if my fragile teen mind doesn't comprehend that.

dealt with sick, neglected iguanas. If you had you would
truly understand what is being said here.

Here is my 40 year old opinion....I would much rather abort
then be responsible for any suffering that I would cause these
guys. You should be grateful that igs are hard to find
where you live. Do the igs a favor and leave it that way.

As you can see this is a very touchy subject to alot of us.
The picture below is of my poor girl when I adopted her
from the shelter. She is pathetic!

I understand now why you would abort them. I guess i would just like to see the iganas grow from owners in states where they're rare. I guess i'll leave it up to them.

I live in Buffalo, NY and we also have an over population of iguanas in poor conditions. I see iguanas being dropped off at the SPCA all the time, because uninformed parents buy them for their children, and when they get too big, or become a hassle, they don't want them anymore. It breaks my heart. Most of those iguanas are put to sleep because there's really no place for them, or they are virtually untameable from years of neglect. If I could and had the room to, I would adopt a few of them, but with a 2 year old daughter and all the animals I currently own, that would be a little difficult. I just saw an iguana at a pet store the other day in horrible conditions, which I'm now doing the best I can to see go to a good home. I really don't think there's a point to hatching eggs unless they will go to a good home.
