Why is sex determination so difficult in gila's? Why doesn't probing work?

Thanks,
Chris

Males hemipenes bend at a right angle. The only accurate ways are to ultrasound or manually invert their hemipenes.
I have a couple of sex comparative picture on my site.

Probing does not work. The only ways are to manually prolapse them or by ultrasound. Some people can visually sex them but some times there wrong.
