Red Eyed Tree Frogs

avengedphish Feb 05, 2005 04:26 PM

Hi I am thinking about getting some red eyed tree frogs. I want to get around 5 or 6 and I was wondering whether I should get males or females. Eventually I would like to breed them so I could probably get a male later after I get to know the frogs better. I was also wondering what type of cage I hsould get. I know that they are fairly arboreal, so I was wondering if there should be water at the bottom. If someone could help me out it's be great.

I would not get these unless you have a little experience in dealing with Treefrogs first. They tend to be a little sensitive.

You may be very good at caring for them but you really have to do your research first to see if you can give them everything they need before you buy them. Otherwise -- it will be a costly mistake that will result in a pile of dead frogs.

For example -- breeding them is not the hardest thing in the world (but a rather detailed process). You need a rain chamber and need to consider all that is involved in getting them to breed (and you need to first get them to survive and thrive so that they will breed in first place). You can't just get a male and then a female or vise versa, put them together and wait for eggs. You need more males than females in order to have breeding work.

I know I am going on and on but I just wanted to point out a few of the many factors you will have to consider before you get RETF's.

They are great but do LOTS AND LOTS of homework before you make a final decision.

Good luck

Steve
