good luck finding a copperhead or a timber in upstate. I lived here all my life been herping for most of it about 20 yrs and have never ever seen either in the wild in NY. Ive been around most of NY looking for these in known habitats. if you do find them make sure you get good pics. good luck and let us know what you find

Hey my name is Greg I am in Sidney my E mail is bikeboy@si.rr.com

Matt Harris Feb 07, 2005 09:11 AM

...that those snakes are illegal without an endangered species permit. I take it you mean Sidney, NY near I-88?

choppergreg Feb 07, 2005 04:33 PM

Hey I do not live there. Just have a vacation house there. My timber is a cbb. Wanted to clarify that. I dislike wc animals because of the pain in the neck w/parrasites.

Matt Harris Feb 07, 2005 06:39 PM

That's good. It wasn't quite clear where you were from, and there is a Sidney NY. I just wanted to make you aware of it just in case AND DEC does browse these forums.

In fact, NY doesn't distinguish between Canebrake form or Northern form, simply that they are both Crotalus horridus. Nor do they distinguish between WC and CBB, though there likely no way they'd issue a permit for a WC snake....at least not from my experience.

Take Care.

Hey Matt I just posted a Question about young timber I have. I also just bought a weekend/summer house in the Catskills. Delaware county. I was telling my wife whwn the warm weather gets here I would love to go try and photograph Some of N.Y.native reptiles. Possibly we can get together or you can tell me some good spots to go. I have some c.b black rats and albinos that I use in my sciense class lectures.

and you can never have enough of in-situ pics. Thanx,

I took these photos while field herping in NY. In the right spots they are not too hard to find. The key is knowing the right spots...and most conscientious herpers will not give those spots away.
