Mealworm Breeding Question.... Why are there more beetles than worms????

chibicricket Feb 05, 2005 05:13 PM

I have been breeding mealies for close to 3 months now, and up until recently, I had a large quantity of them. I started off with 500, and after a month it seemed that I had over 1000. I moved in the beginning of January and didn't keep up with giving them potatoes and such for about 2 weeks. Now my actual worm count is down to like 100 and there are tons of beetles. Tons! Will the beetles just makes lots of worms? Or is there anything I can do to get them going again?

If you don't feed them, the beetles and larger worms will eat the smaller worms and the eggs. This could be the reason. But if you have tons of beetles now, and you feed em, yeah you should be back rolling in mealies in a few weeks.

...from what I've noticed, running out of food also seems to trigger full-size mealworms into pupating.

Yeah, that's what I'm guessing too. I've been feeding them the past week, and I'm really hoping lots o' beetles will soon equal lots o' worms.

i have noticed in mine if i fail to give them fresh sources of water the small worms seem to be the first to expire, which maybe the cause.
