Laudakia [Agama] stellio

stano40 Feb 05, 2005 11:38 PM

My darling wife brought home a a beautiful male pyramid agama. There is some good material on line concerning agama's.

My questions is,is there anything special needed for this type of lizard.

His substrate is 50% calcium sand and 50% forest substrate. This is, one half of the house is sand and the other side is forest. I have given him crickets to start with. He has a 100 watt basking light. He seems to like this arrangement.

Any other things I should know would be helpful.

Thanks

Your wife seems very sweet to have given you such a COOL gift, hehehehe

I have a breeding group of L. stellio stellio/ black agamas
I keep them about 95 - 100/ 110ish in later after noon when it heats up in the basking area. The rest of tank/ cool side in the 80's.

I feed mine crickets, they love superworms, and I also provide salad every day/ or other day.

Salads consist of collard greens, kale, romaine, any leafy greens.
Veggies, squash, string beans, carrot, peas, shredded sweet potato, ground up lentils and split peas. Sometimes I shread cooked chicken or turkey and mix that in.

And fruits, also, I use shredded apples, and bananas too. Just try different things.

Thats worked well so far for me, with them. I'm hoping to see some baby agamas this spring

Hey good luck with your guy, post a pic when ya get a chance, we love lizard pics here

Hi Eve,

Thanks for the great info. My wife named the agama max and he seems really nice. He is the 18th lizard we have. % of which are baby emerald swifts. I'm running out of living space. My living room looks like a zoo, with all the lizards, 5 dogs, aquariums all around the house and other animals in other parts of the house. I sleep next to a day gecko and two white lined geckos and over my head is a leopard gecko who lost his tail and is a little sick. Every now and then if seems to stand there and shake, like he's having a seizure. I'm watching him closely.

I've had trouble before posting pictures on the forum so I had to start an album and as soon as I get pictures of the new guy I'll post that connection.

Thanks again for that wonderful help. I wasn't sure about the veggies, but he'll get them now.

Hey I know where your coming from, have lizards everywhere, plus the doggies, cats, bunny, squirrel and fish.

I think so many of us on this wonderful site, are animals Nuts, it's awesome to meet so many others that have the same love and share their lives with the critters.

I think you and I talked a couple weeks ago on the spiney lizard forum, as I also have baby emeralds, remember?

Mine are about 3 1/2 months old now, real cute!

As far a the leopard geck, are ya sure its not a lack of calcuim, the shaking and seizures can be a sign of that. Hope you can get him to perk up. I would try some liquid calcium suppliment.

Hey nice talking with ya, thanks for sharing your site and lizard pics with me.

Hope Max, grows into a fine old Agama and has a healthy happy life,

Thanks for the tip eve. I'll try the liquid calcium.

I remember you from the spiny lizard forum and it is always a pleasure to talk with you.

The leopard gecko seems to be a night guy and I notice him usually standing up and walking around a little like a little alligator. He hates to be sprayed, but seems to be getting liquids into him. His name is Ike and he looks like a tough little guy.

I think he will survive, but he has his own personal house now, just in case the others guys he was with were picking on him.

Don't want to lose him like I recently lost my baby chameleon (pee wee), he was my little buddy and I grieve for him.

Thats a dang shame. I lost my 6 year old Bearded dragon last month also. Sucks!

Anyway I hope Ike does well, yeah, they are nocturnal, so he will always be a night roamer

I still would try th ecalcium for the shakes or tremors and see if it clears up.

Thanks Eve,

Is there any brand of supplement with calcium that you would recommend.

dust your lizards crickets/bugs with calcuim ?
I use miner-all by sticky tongue for indoor retiles.

And I also purchased liquid calcium syrup online, for some female collareds I have, that were having twitchy toes after egg laying. If you are interested in this and need the name email me and I will give it to you.

Just a post note about another friend passing. My beautiful agama "max" has left me to go to a better life. I don't know what happened but I wish you he best.

Max on his last day was doing fine. He was alert and well during the morning and afternoon. When my wife came home later that evening she noticed that max was laying next to the glass with his mouth open. She grabbed him and checked his mouth for impaction. Mouth was clear. Max was gone. He ate well, but was very skittish in his house. The only thing I can think of was that my big black dog poked at his house and literally scared him to death. This is a mystery that only max can tell me about.

Here's to you max.
