Eastern Narrowmouth Toads/Frogs...Poisonous???

HerperHelmz Feb 06, 2005 12:51 AM

Anyone know? I'm getting some to feed to some snakes, and I want to know if they are poisonous to the snakes or not.

Mike, I had a friend feed those eastern narrowmouth frogs each to a clutch of hognose vipers and every viper died within a day or eating one. Some were dead with the frog in their mouth? Another friend said he fed them with no problems but I am not sure his snakes did not have problems. Personally, its not worth the risk. Now they make cute fun pets and eat dayold crickets and are themselves a decent pet.

Mike, years ago I had the same question, except mine was about Bufo alvarius and my wife’s dog. So I decided to a little science, similar to your question.....“Things that make you go O'no!!...thats not right”

They may be poisonous, but if I'm not mistaken the fatalities occurred when they were eaten by snakes that are not adapted to feed on them.

Since your pine woods snake (I assume this is who will be eating them) has a range which overlaps these frogs it's probably well adapted to cope with the poison or would know to avoid the frogs.
