Corn snake or no?

allthatslithers Feb 06, 2005 12:55 PM

Caught this little guy on a recent trip to the Keys.
Assumed he was normal corn, the wife is arguing otherwise.
He does look a little "off" for a juvie corn to be honest. Strange eyes and has strange colouring to him. Underbelly is yellow with brown (think banana king color)then going more orangey towards the tail.I tried to capture this but digital camera is being dreadful and won't focus on it.Are we going crazy or is there something weird about this cornsnake?

Photos can be found at link

What does the venter look like? If the black/white checkerboard is absent or greatly reduced, it's a rosy. Not that that's necessarily a valid suspecies. Very pretty snake.

Yeah had a hard time trying to get camera to focus and him to cooperate but it is an odd banana shade of yellow with brown. I couldn't call it a typical checkerboard. This photo is actually his underbelly. The yellow gets a bit more brown/orange towards the cloaca, after that it is solid brown. It does not look like the rosy rat I have, that's not to say it's not. I can put them side by side and this guy still looks completely odd.

That's a weird one alright! If you had caught it in eastern Mexico, I would swear it shows some flavirufa influence!

Lol,well that would certainly be an exciting and new find. Florida you just never know, lol.
This wouldn't be an eastern milksnake would it? Can't seem to find a pic of a juvie.
Good disposition though somewhat shy,has taken pinkies thus far like a champ!Eager to see what he matures like either way!
I appreciate your responses guys. I know it probably seems an odd question, but having over 100 snakes, many of them corns..I've never seen one quite like this.

Well that certainly is odd looking... almost looks like an Elaphe/Lampropeltis triangulum hybrid, if such a combo is possible, and somehow the latter made it to florida!

I can't tell, but I can give you some advice that might settle the debate. I'm pretty sure it goes like this - if the anal plate is divided it's elaphe/patherophis, if it is NOT divided it's lampropeltis. If I'm wrong then I think it's the other way around, but I've heard that you can distinguish the two that way. Hopefully someone who knows more about this than I do will chime in.

Looks like a really weird corn....but a corn nonetheless.
Depending on where you were exactly,I guess, you may have collected a protected species.

Well that's what I'd call it at least. It is an interesting specimen.
