The amazing Amaunette

cable2001 Feb 06, 2005 03:21 PM

This probably happens to you guys all the time, but it was a first for me.

My male, Amon, is a greedy little guy. Whenever I come home, he runs to the middle of the tank and begs for a bug. He knows I like to toss them into the tank in the middle because the right end has cacti and the left has rocks. Both ends have lots of places for crickets to hide, so the center gives the best chance for them to be eaten.

Well, Amon is also a lot faster than Amaunette, and always catches the crickets first. She's so used to it, that sometimes she doesn't even bother trying.

Anyway, yesterday, I wanted to be sure she got something to eat, and wanted her to get fed first. She was sitting on the rocks, so it was a calculated risk that she would be able to catch the cricket before it scurried to safety.

So, I lifted the lid, held the cricket right over her, and dropped it. And she caught it in midair! I was totally amazed! Even as aggressive as Amon is, he's never even tried to catch one falling in.

it's so fun when the submissive ones outdo the dominant ones. my girl is the crazy eater in this bunch. lately she does not even swallow them, just stores a whole bunch in her fat chin and then swallows them later so she can grab as many as possible before walter. you would really think i never fed her by the way she acts.

Ha! I imagine her looking like a chipmunk with cheeks all puffed out!

I keep my lizards outside all summer, and I dangle a japanesse beetle attracting disc in the pen by a string...I have beetles lured to the pen all day long. My lizards will jump and and grab them in mid-air...it is very cool to see. Sometimes they will run and jump and catch them, other times, they will sit close and jump straight up to get them.

That's great

It's cool to think about the collared lizard stuffing her cheeks before swallowing.

When my lizards are hungry enough I'll hold up a cricket and have them jump for it. Cory's a little to full or chubby to make the big jumps lately.

By the way, Cory is becoming more used to having us around and today I handfed him while holding him. He used to be to P.O.ed to eat when being held.

I am letting some hornworms (aka tomatoworms) grow and turn into moths, so that Ezra and Annabella can get some fun variety.
