Sick Oregon Newt

maxk678 Feb 06, 2005 03:55 PM

Hi everyone,
I have two oregon newts living in a five gallon tank. One is fine and happy and healthy as the day I got them, the other, larger one has taken to staying on the land part of the tank and acting 'flat' and looks as though he is losing weight - I don't think he has eaten in a long while. I don't think it's the quality of water as the other one is fine. Does any one have any suggestions of how to make him feel better? I don't want him to die...
Thanks

I would advise seperating both newts until you have figured what could be wrong. I would also recomend eventually getting a larger aquarium that will offer the possibility of greater water depth. You might consider bringing a sample of water to your local tropical fish store and having them test it for ammonia and nitrite, or even better, purchase test kits of your own. Another important thing to double check is the temperature of the water. Idealy, it shouldn't ever rise above the low 70's. If you suspect that the newt is unhealthy the best thing to do is to take it to a qualified veterinarian. To locate one near you see www.arav.org or www.herpvetconection.com Good luck,
