Water holes?

justin stricklin Feb 06, 2005 07:00 PM

What kind of water holes do you guys use for your outdoor enclosures? I was just using 2 good sized plastic boxes and it did not work to well, and I would like to try soemhting new this year. Do yall just make a cement pond like thing? I realy do not like to use cement on any animals because it can be abbrassive but if you put some plastic over it it will become smooth but then the rutles cannot get a grip on it very well. I would like to see pics if anyone has them.

I use a plastic paint roller tray with disposable liners. The slope and textured surface of the liners provide easy access, and if/when the liners get too gross I can replace them.

You can often get those paint roller trays at the dollar stores!

I use a glazed ceramic dish that was meant to go under a large potted plant.

Alright, thanx. That is sort of what I did last year. See I keep about 10 of them, nevr realy counted them (only one male so do not worry bout that). The whole summer last year they were all fititng into those 2 water holes for some reason. Never got out. I had to pick them up and put them on the round so they would eat. I even had one female to lay eggs in the water. They hatched too. Still have the babies, but anyways what do you htink could cause that? No it was not the heat either. I have a small weeping willow tree and had a piece of tin over 1/2 the pen. Before spring, I am going to pull up all that stupid burmuda grass and put some clover in there. And whiel Iw as at it I was going to fix a good watering hole. Do yall think it would be fine to use cement. I am against it but if there is anyone out there that is very successful at keeping and breeding them that use it and have had no bad abbrasions I'll consider it. Thanks!!

if your turtle layed in the water she's stressed, is the habitate over crowded?
and constant sitting in water is a sign of sickness or being egg bound.

well my father and i layed a concreat slab by my pen last last year and it started to rain on one of the last section we did so layed a slab over the section and went outside later when we came back the section had the imprint of the tarp in it and it was verry smooth. like the homedepot floor. so you could try that. sorry for rambling.

I use the plastic tray things that go under potted plants, I used to use ceramic ones but I dont think mine were glazed they always grew mold, the paint roller trays also work, is this for outside? an old member here used cement mixing tubs, sunk into the ground surrounded by bricks so the soil wouldn't cave in and put a large paver in side it so they could use it like a ramp.

Sorry i took so long to ge back. I have not felt very well. I do not think they were over crowded or anythign. I do not know the exact dimensions of the pen. But I would say it is around 20 feet long and 8 feet wide. I had 7 or 8 in there and only one male. I will give it another shot after a little bit more reconstruction and all and will report on how they are doing when it warms up. I need to pull up that bermuda grass and put some clover down too. I figue I will do that smoothing the concrte out. We did that to or storm cellar and many other things so I do know about. Would yall suggest putting in multiple water holes or just one big one on one end. I figure it's be best to put in 2 pretty good sized ones on eahc end.
