Problem with new flies

dubzilla Feb 06, 2005 09:14 PM

I just bought flies from saurian, but they are too small and active. They climb up the walls then get caught in water droplets and frog won't eat them. what do i do?

If you dust your flies with vitamin/mineral dust, they won't climb the walls right away. You can also put them in the fridge for a couple of minutes to slow them down. Besides that, not much you can do.

what about clear tape like the cricket guys use w/ a lube? just a suggestion.Chris

How is this tape w/lube done, Chris?

If the frogs are new, they may still be shy and you may not be seeing them eat. I agree that the dusting inhibits their climbing the glass somewhat, but most all young darts can climb the glass after them if they're hungry. Unless they are in a nursery tank, try to tap the flies out over the plant leaves or toward the back where they will be climbing the background rather than the glass, and be more accessible to the frogs.

When raising younger darts I put a piece of sliced orange or piece of banana in the tank and when I feed I put the flies on that. It keeps the flies in one spot longer.

That works too, for a short time, except the flies aren't dusted with the calcium, etc.
