Lizard Vine Plant Question???

FEENIEE Feb 06, 2005 10:05 PM

Hi there,
Does anyone know if this plant is safe for Veiled Chams?? Its proper name is Tetrastigma Voinierianum. I saw it in a nursery as a 25 year old vine and it looked straight out of a rain forest! the base was huge. For those who live in Seattle, it is the huge vine that runs through Molbaks. They were selling starters off it and I bought one, it's HUGE, but I'm not sure if it's o.k. for my chams. Anyone know???
thanks
Feenie

it is also known as Cissus tetrastigma and is in the same family as grapes, so should cause no problems re: toxicity. However, some in this family have small points, spines, or excessively hairy leaves (underside) and/or stems. I don't know if this is the case with this particular vine, but check it out first (esp. on older leaves) to see if they might cause a problem.

Btw, the reason it seems like it is right out of the rain forest is b/c its home is Laos

O.k. cool. It does look just like a grape vine, but 20 times bigger! The leave are fuzzy, but no worse than the purple passion vine but I'll have to recheck to see if there are spines or pokies, I have really sensative skin and it didn't bother me at all but that's just me . I think to my chams it would feel like walking on a shag rug!!

Another common name for it is Chestnut Vine b/c the "points" at the leaf margins are similar to chestnut tree leaves. This is not a great pic but you can see the points. These would be much less apparent on younger leaves.

Ouch, I see it. What do you use them for?? Also I purchased some mulberry trees for my silkworms. Do I need to do anything special to them? They are just babies and I'm going organic on the soil, but is there any thing else I should know???
Thanks
